Transcript of Evidence Pitch
Hi, I am Asees Kaur, a fourth-year student studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree at Deakin’s Burwood campus, and am applying for a Deakin Hallmark in Leadership.
I have been fortunate enough to have been able to participate in a range of Students Helping Students programs throughout my degree, including my first two roles as a Writing Mentor and Library Student Assistant in 2020, followed by becoming an Outbound Campaigns Mentor in 2021, and a Success Coach in 2022, all roles I still continue today.
Some strategies I have developed and applied in my work across these roles are active listening, rephrasing to check for meaning and asking open-ended questions to understand the students’ prior knowledge and act as a guide in their thinking to help them build upon their knowledge. The purpose of these strategies is to collaborate with the students to empower them in building their own capacity to help themselves and gain control of their learning rather than over-servicing them III in order to create independent learners.
The sighs of relief and words of appreciation that I receive at the end of an interaction with a student are evidence of the positive influence my leadership skills have on the confidence and well-being of others.
Through these roles, I have not only developed as a mentor but also as a student, learner and leader and will continue to do so even after I graduate as a lifelong learner.
Thank you for listening.
